KIDS IN DESERT

The backpacks of Adilene Lopez Moreno, 11, and her mother, Rita Moreno Ocampo, of San Martin, Oaxaca, Mexico, remain at the site where the girl succumbed to heat exhaustion about 3 p.m. on June 14, 2002, east of Nolia and west of Sells in the West Desert of the Tohono O'odham Reservation. Moreno Ocampo sat with her daughter's body near a dirt road before seeking help. Other illegal immigrants passed while she sat through temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
