VERITAS, or the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, is an instrument built to observe gamma ray emission from extreme astrophysical phenomena in the Universe. The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution houses a system of four 12-meter scopes at the base of the Santa Rita Mountains in the Coronado National Forest in the Sonoran Desert in Green Valley, Arizona, USA.
